Many learning providers have adopted artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions to stay competitive in today’s workplace. However, the most innovative providers recognize the continued need for learning experiences to remain human centered.
Earlier this year, NIIT Learning Systems Limited (NIIT) announced that it has acquired SweetRush, Inc. (SweetRush), a provider of AI-enabled custom learning experience design and strategic training interventions. This partnership brings together NIIT’s managed learning services scale with SweetRush’s expertise.
Behind the Acquisition
For NIIT, the acquisition was driven largely by SweetRush’s reputation in the learning design market. Sapnesh Lalla, NIIT’s CEO, says, “Over time, we began to realize that SweetRush uniquely stood out in the market.” In fact, “Many times when we had the chance to discuss with clients who were working with SweetRush, they highlighted to us the unique quality of the company’s creative design and the extremely polished and engaging content they delivered.” Lalla says. “We saw a consistent pattern and that made us more than curious.”
In addition, “Every time we spoke to someone in the industry about SweetRush, pretty much everyone had a knee jerk reaction and told us it was ‘the bar’ and was admired both for its culture and capabilities,” Lalla says. NIIT was also impressed by SweetRush’s specialty in staff augmentation and their ability to attract and source high-performing talent through what they call “relationship recruiting,” an approach Lalla says they are now working with the company to expand. And finally, SweetRush seemed to have captured the market for creating revenue generating learning products and certifications for the extended enterprise. After considering other mid-sized learning vendors in the market, it became clear that “having SweetRush as part of the family would be a tremendous addition to our value to clients.”
For SweetRush, the decision also came down to finding the right partner. Arturo Schwartzberg, the company’s co-founder, says SweetRush was looking for a strategic acquirer where “value and capabilities would be added in both directions.”
“We consider our culture to be the foundation of our success,” Schwartzberg says, so it was vital that the companies were culturally aligned. “We’re talking about the legacy of a company we think is very special and the people who we care about deeply. We wanted a company that not only valued our culture but wanted us to protect it. NIIT met those ideals. SweetRush’s brand, team and culture remain fully intact, and there were no layoffs as a result of the deal.
Enhanced Customer Value
Schwartzberg says the partnership gives SweetRush the ability to deliver its design expertise at a much larger scale. “NIIT has a truly global reach and is a powerhouse in managed services, facilitation and learning management system (LMS) administration, and they are putting tremendous resources into AI innovation. Now we can offer so much more to our clients.”
Lalla says the two companies’ strengths are highly complementary. He compares their partnership to a kitchen responsible for feeding a household: Most of the time, the kitchen must reliably deliver daily meals — requiring consistent, efficient operations that ensure everyone is fed. But occasionally, the kitchen hosts something more elaborate, such as a holiday dinner or special event.
NIIT has built its business around delivering those “daily meals” of managed learning services at scale, while SweetRush excels at designing high-impact, creative learning experiences. The combined organization can excel at both.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, both NIIT and SweetRush are focused on helping clients navigate the AI-enabled future of work. Lalla notes that individually and collectively, the companies have been expanding their ability to provide strategic insights and guidance, particularly around AI and its growing impact on L&D.
“These are challenging times, and clients are seeking guidance,” Lalla says. “NIIT, and that now includes SweetRush, is in a strong position to provide this guidance, and we are doing so more and more. This is the added value we are now offering to clients, and I believe it’s a winning formula for our combined future.”
