Learning Tools Interoperability™ (LTI) is a technical standard developed by 1EdTech, formerly known as IMS Global Learning Consortium, to simplify the integration between learning management systems (LMSs) and other external learning applications.
LTI allows platforms to securely connect with third-party tools, such as content libraries, assessment systems and collaboration applications, without requiring custom integrations for each tool.
Overview
LTI has become a foundational standard in digital learning ecosystems, supporting interoperability across corporate training and higher education platforms. By using LTI, organizations can launch external tools directly within an LMS while maintaining a consistent user experience.
The standard was first introduced in 2010 and has evolved significantly. Modern implementations are based on LTI 1.3 and LTI Advantage, which provide enhanced security, scalability and richer data exchange capabilities compared to earlier versions.
Rather than building one-off integrations, LTI enables a standardized approach where learning platforms (often called “tool consumers” or “platforms”) connect with external applications (“tools”) through a secure, trusted framework.
