What Is Skills Development?

Skills development is the process of acquiring, enhancing or refining the specific knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) employees need to perform their jobs effectively. In the workplace, skills development generally falls into three categories:

  • Upskilling: Enhancing existing skills to improve performance in a current role.
  • Reskilling: Developing new skills to transition into a different role.
  • Cross-skilling: Acquiring skills that may not be required for an employee’s primary role but supports collaboration with other teams.

Skills development can include both technical skills, such as data analysis or programming, and human skills, such as communication, leadership and problem-solving. Learning and development (L&D) teams support skills development through a range of approaches, including formal training programs, on-the job experience, self-paced learning and mentoring.

Skills Development Process

A structured skills development process typically includes the following steps:

  • Understanding current skills: Assessing employee capabilities and identifying gaps between existing skills and those required for current or future roles.
  • Providing targeted learning experiences: Designing or sourcing learning solutions such as workshops, eLearning, on-the-job training, mentoring or coaching to address specific skills gaps.
  • Applying skills on the job: Creating opportunities for employees to practice and refine new skills in their day-to-day work to reinforce learning and drive performance performance.
  • Measuring progress and impact: Evaluating skills acquisition, performance improvement and business outcomes to determine whether learning efforts are producing meaningful results.

Benefits of Skills Development

Skills development delivers measurable value to both employees and organizations when it is intentional, ongoing and aligned with business needs.
