Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to learn something new when you’re working alongside others? That’s exactly what we’ve discovered at Assisted Living Locators when it comes to training our new franchise owners. As director of training, this is something I’ve learned: Successful franchise onboarding isn’t just about handing someone a manual and wishing them luck. It’s about creating an environment where new owners can learn, grow and thrive together.
Gone are the days of sitting alone with a stack of training materials. We’ve found that when new franchisees connect with each other, have access to experienced owners and learn through real-world experiences, something magical happens. They cannot only grasp concepts faster but also build the confidence they need to hit the ground running. This article reviews the keys to setting up your new franchise owners to win from the start with one-in-class onboarding.
Why Learning Together Makes All the Difference
Think about it — when you’re starting a new business, wouldn’t you want to learn from someone who’s already been there? That’s why we’ve built our program around real people sharing real experiences. Our franchisees learn faster because they’re getting insights from those who’ve already walked the path. They’re not just memorizing procedures; they’re learning what actually works in the real world.
When our new owners hit a roadblock (and let’s be honest, everyone does), they don’t have to figure it out alone. They’ve got a whole community ready to help, share advice and offer support. It’s like having a built-in support system from day one.
How we make it happen.
Here’s what we’ve found works best: Each of our new franchisees experience a full week of in-person training at our corporate headquarters. This training is designed to give them a solid overview of their business model and how our proven processes work. Each month, a group of new franchise owners are together in this process and experience both in-person, classroom training and a day in the field, experiencing what it’s like to operate their franchise. Our new franchisee training fosters strong bonds among peers throughout the process.
One of the first things I tell new owners as we embark on their franchise journey is, “training and coaching is forever.” Once our new owners return home, they are surrounded by a virtual army of peers, franchise support and a one-on-one trainer for the next three months. They are also assigned to the appropriate region to participate in Franchise Advisory Council meetings, where they can enjoy ongoing peer advice and mentoring.
One of my favorite parts of our program is the hands-on training. Instead of just talking about how to assess senior care communities or build referral partnerships, we get out there and do it together. At the end of their “official” classroom training period, each franchisee joins their territory for a site visit, where they are shadowed by a coach, who can assist them with the practical application of all they’ve learned.
We also love role-playing exercises — yes, they might feel a bit awkward at first, but they’re incredibly effective! We practice everything from client consultations to networking events. It’s better to work out the kinks in a safe environment than with your first real client.
Supporting Long-Term Success
The support doesn’t stop after the initial training. Once a new owner “graduates” from their launch training, they are assigned a coach. Each franchisee has access to a coach for the lifetime of their ownership. We check in regularly with our new owners to make sure they’re on track and getting the guidance they need.
I’ve seen firsthand how this approach transforms nervous new owners into confident business leaders. When franchisees learn together, they don’t just survive — they thrive. They build lasting relationships with their peers and become part of a community that celebrates each other’s successes.
As we look to the future of franchising, one thing is clear: The old way of isolated learning just doesn’t cut it anymore. Success comes from building connections, sharing experiences and growing together. After all, isn’t that what business is really about?
