It could even be the difference between taking the next step in your career and remaining stagnant.\r\n\r\nIn other words, your personal brand matters.\r\n\r\nTraining Industry\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/magazine\/spring-2024\/special-report-training-industrys-ld-career-and-salary-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> L&amp;D Career and Salary Study<\/a> found that the most common career goal among L&amp;D leaders is to move into a director of training or chief learning officer (CLO) role. Personal branding can help learning leaders advance into these roles by marketing their unique strengths and accomplishments.\r\n\r\nHere, we\u2019ll share personal branding tips and recommendations for learning leaders. First, let\u2019s consider what \u201cpersonal branding\u201d means in practice.\r\n<h2>What Is Personal Branding?<\/h2>\r\nAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/online.hbs.edu\/blog\/post\/personal-branding-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Business School Online<\/a>, \u201cPersonal branding\u00a0is the intentional, strategic practice of defining and expressing your value.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnita Ann Mihelic, CPTM, director of learning and development at ConstructConnect, says personal branding refers to the \u201cspecial quality\u201d that you bring to your interactions with your learners, your stakeholders and, ultimately, with everyone. It\u2019s about \u201chow people see you and how you make people feel when you\u2019re interacting with them.\u201d Your personal brand is shaped by the \u201clasting impression\u201d you leave on others, Mihelic says.\r\n\r\nYour personal brand also represents your expertise, says Amy DuVernet, Ph.D., CPTM, director of training and development at Training Industry. It encompasses your unique strengths, but it could also encompass areas where you\u2019re not as strong, she says. The quality of your work \u2014 and whether that\u2019s consistent or inconsistent \u2014 also factors into your personal brand, because it shapes others\u2019 expectations. Your personal brand is a promise of the quality and consistency of your work and expertise.\r\n<h2>How to Build Your Personal Brand<\/h2>\r\nIt takes time to cultivate a personal brand reflective of your unique skills, values and strengths. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you get started.\r\n<h3>Listen and learn:<\/h3>\r\nWhen Mihelic moved into an official L&amp;D role in 2017 (before that, she took on certain team training responsibilities, such as training new hires), she was suddenly responsible for training employees across all teams in her organization. Much of the training she delivered was voluntary, so she worked hard to market her programs and communicate training\u2019s value. \u201cAt that stage, my biggest concern was that I wanted to be really reliable [and] really consistent, taking everybody into account because we have a distributed workforce. So, the virtual and hybrid experience of learning was really important to me,\u201d she says.\r\n\r\nAfter establishing a \u201cbaseline of quality and consistency,\u201d Mihelic was ready to begin building her personal brand from there. First, she considered what she wanted her personal brand to look like. She still wanted to be seen as very dependable and reliable. But mostly, Mihelic says she wanted others to see her training programs as relevant, immediately applicable and ultimately, \u201cworth everybody\u2019s time.\u201d\r\n\r\nTo build a personal brand that reflects her ability to deliver strategically aligned, job-relevant learning programs, Mihelic makes a point to ask her stakeholders thoughtful questions and to listen to their needs. This allows her to shape her stakeholders\u2019 vision into a quality learning experience and to act as a true partner.\r\n\r\nIf you\u2019re looking to build a personal brand reflective of your ability to act as a strategic business partner, making time to listen and learn is a great place to start.\r\n<h3>Share your expertise:<\/h3>\r\nSharing your thought leadership is another way to build your personal brand and position yourself as a subject matter expert (SME) in the L&amp;D space.\r\n\r\nAs a learning professional, there are many ways to share your thought leadership, including:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Writing for industry publications or journals.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Guest speaking on an <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/the-ultimate-ld-podcast-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L&amp;D podcast<\/a> \u2014 or even starting your own, if you have the time and bandwidth to do so.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Starting a blog where you can share your L&amp;D insights with your peers.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Posting regularly on LinkedIn to share your perspective on trending training topics and challenges.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Speaking at an industry conference or event.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Celebrate your wins:<\/h3>\r\nWhen it comes to personal branding, often, \u201cthe work you do is going to speak for itself,\u201d DuVernet says. However, your work as an L&amp;D professional isn\u2019t always visible. As a result, your \u201cwins\u201d (both big and small) can go unrecognized. Consider sharing your achievements with your network on LinkedIn. Or, you might send out a quarterly email newsletter to your organization highlighting your training team\u2019s recent achievements. (This can also help build team morale.)\r\n\r\nAlthough promoting our wins can feel uncomfortable, DuVernet says, it\u2019s critical for establishing credibility and trust within both your organization and your broader peer network.\r\n<h3>Create an elevator pitch:<\/h3>\r\nCreating an elevator pitch that sums up your unique skills, qualities and achievements is a great way to promote both yourself and your training services. Mihelic says that when building an elevator pitch, remember: It\u2019s not about you. \u201cIt\u2019s about how you can be a partner to the business\u201d and help it achieve key goals.\r\n\r\nThus, it\u2019s important to have multiple elevator pitches adapted to different scenarios in your toolbox, DuVernet says. For example, if you\u2019re speaking with a stakeholder from an organization going through a major change initiative, such as a merger or acquisition, your pitch might focus on a successful shift you helped facilitate in your own organization.\r\n\r\nOr, if you\u2019re in an executive-level business meeting, you may find that you have just 30 seconds to explain who you are and the work you do to your executive team. \u201cThat\u2019s a huge opportunity to position yourself as a trusted business partner and to create a lasting impression on your stakeholders,\u201d DuVernet says.\r\n\r\nAn effective elevator pitch tells a story about the value you bring to the business in a clear, concise way.\r\n<h3>Don\u2019t be afraid to let your personality shine:<\/h3>\r\nAs a learning leader, a personal brand that positions you as a true business partner is invaluable. However, don\u2019t be afraid to let your personality shine through.\r\n\r\nProfessionalism is an important quality to infuse in your personal brand. \u201cBut it\u2019s also OK to be fun, to be light and to laugh,\u201d Mihelic says. Those attributes are part of Mihelic\u2019s personal brand for two key reasons: First, learning can be intimidating. When you add fun and play into the learning process, \u201cIt can break up the nervousness, and people are more relaxed and more open to learning.\u201d Second, Mihelic says, \u201cI actually really like my job, and I enjoy what I'm doing. And if I'm having a good time, I feel like other people are invited into that, too.\u201d\r\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\r\nIn L&amp;D, your brand is your promise. An influential and strategic personal brand can lead to more career opportunities and new connections over time. Or, it can be the reason why you were passed over for a coveted opportunity.\r\n\r\nAs Mihelic shares, \u201cYour brand exists,\u201d whether you\u2019re aware of it, or actively shaping it, or not.
