However, even the most strategically developed learning initiatives won\u2019t achieve business results without effective delivery. As Kathryn Connolly, CPTM, director of global talent development at WEX Inc., explains, \u201cCompanies invest in learning to achieve [their] goals and [improve] performance,\u201d but if training is not delivered in a way that achieves \u201cpositive knowledge transfer,\u201d organizations will be left to retrain employees and\/or provide additional <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/wiki\/leadership\/coaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coaching<\/a> hours \u2014 wasting time and resources many organizations can\u2019t afford to spare. In other words, she says, \u201cEffective delivery of training is essential to maximize bottom-line results for the business.\u201d\r\n\r\nThrough over a decade of research, Training Industry has found that training delivery, a term referring to how learning initiatives are presented to learners, is one of the key process capabilities of <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/what-makes-a-great-training-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">great training organizations<\/a>.\r\n<h2>Types of Delivery<\/h2>\r\nJust as the training function has evolved over time, so has the ways in which it has delivered learning and development (L&amp;D) initiatives, says Dr. Bill Brantley, CPTM, program manager for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office\u2019s career coaching program. For example, he began his career as a training professional using \u201cstand-and-deliver,\u201d PowerPoint-based \u201csage on the stage\u201d delivery before quickly realizing its limitations \u2014 including, significantly, disengagement. Now, he delivers training in myriad ways, from short videos to role-play to self-guided delivery.\r\n\r\nAlthough Training Industry research found that instructor-led training (ILT) has long been a popular <a href=\"https:\/\/store.trainingindustry.com\/products\/research-report-what-learners-want-strategies-for-training-delivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">way to deliver training that resonates with a majority of learners<\/a>, the coronavirus pandemic has forced organizations to embrace remote learning, with <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/glossary\/virtual-instructor-led-training-vilt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual instructor-led training (VILT)<\/a>, eLearning, interactive training videos and other virtual delivery formats taking center stage. In fact, Training Industry\u2019s ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/H5ZYHCJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulse survey<\/a> has found that 73% of learning leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nxtbook.com\/nxtbooks\/trainingindustry\/tiq_20200708\/index.php#\/p\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are now delivering training virtually<\/a>, compared to 50% before the pandemic.\r\n\r\nWhile remote learning has eliminated the \u201cneed and complexity\u201d of travel associated with ILT, Connolly says, \u201cit has also challenged us to maintain the relationships we have [with our learners].\u201d As most learners still benefit from face-to-face interaction, L&amp;D professionals must <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/articles\/remote-learning\/4-ways-to-foster-human-connection-in-a-digital-learning-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incorporate \u201crelationship-building\u201d into remote learning<\/a>. Pairing remote learning with virtual one-on-one coaching sessions, for example, can create a personalized learning experience where learners can focus on their unique goals.\r\n\r\nTraining videos can also help personalize the remote learning experience. For example, Trent Bartholomew, CPTM, lead instructional designer and course manager at Amtrak, says that creating training videos using the company\u2019s own instructors and employees has been especially impactful because \u201cthe trainees recognize many of the people in the videos.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhile creating training videos internally may seem daunting at first, it is easier than one might think. After all, \u201cwe\u2019re not creating polished movies here,\u201d Bartholomew says. Even a two-to-five minute instructional video can effectively explain complex processes and concepts.","full_width":false,"content_band":[{"acf_fc_layout":"social_callout","blockquote":"Effective delivery of training is essential to maximize bottom-line results for the business."},{"acf_fc_layout":"content_area","wysiwyg":"<h2>Selecting a Delivery Method<\/h2>\r\nWith so many ways to deliver training, selecting the right one can be a challenge. To determine which delivery method is right for your learning initiative, consider the following factors:\r\n<h3>Your Audience<\/h3>\r\nTraining must be delivered with your unique learners in mind. Connolly explains that in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/wiki\/content-development\/learner-preferences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learners\u2019 preferences<\/a>, \u201cwe need to understand and learn about [the] cultures [where] our company does business so we can adapt.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/glossary\/localization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Localizing<\/a> courses to audience needs, and partnering with translation vendors when necessary, can extend your training program\u2019s reach.\r\n<h3>Your Content<\/h3>\r\nEffective delivery does not look the same across learning initiatives. For example, Brantley says, while self-guided training and brief videos are effective for knowledge transfer, interactive simulations and role-play are more appropriate when helping learners practice specific skills. Organizations should always deliver training according to the content at hand.\r\n<h3>Your Resources<\/h3>\r\nOne of the primary challenges with the delivery process is time and resources, Brantley says. For instance, while advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/glossary\/simulation-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simulations<\/a> may prove the best way to deliver a certain training initiative, \u201cWe [often] don\u2019t have the time or money to develop these training delivery vehicles \u2026 So, we settle for a PowerPoint with a group discussion.\u201d Training professionals should refer to their <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/articles\/strategy-alignment-and-planning\/adjusting-your-ld-plan-during-a-crisis-a-4-step-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L&amp;D plans<\/a> to determine which delivery methods are out of reach and which are accessible.\r\n\r\nOf course, training initiatives are not limited to one delivery method. In fact, Bartholomew believes <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/glossary\/blended-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blended learning<\/a> is \u201cby far\u201d one of the best delivery methods, because it \u201cmirrors how adults learn and maximizes everyone\u2019s time.\u201d\r\n<h2>The Future of Training Delivery<\/h2>\r\nCOVID-19 has highlighted what many L&amp;D professionals already knew: <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingindustry.com\/remote-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remote learning<\/a> is not going anywhere. Brantley says the rise in remote learning is \u201cone of the most positive outcomes\u201d of the pandemic. Connolly agrees, adding that after the pandemic, \u201cWe will see new technologies [and] new ideas for learning, and we will have completely shifted our way of thinking when it comes to development and delivery methodologies.\u201d\r\n\r\nIn today\u2019s uncertain business environment, effective delivery is more important than ever, because it positions L&amp;D initiatives for success.
