Agenda

The program spans eight hours and is completed online, over two half-days. Your team will take part in a multi-day live, virtual instructor-led (VILT) class, that includes ample time for discussion, analysis and an applied work project.

PREWORK

Prior to the course, you will have access to prereading assignments and a brief prework exercise. Prereadings consist of a competency modeling process guide and three real-world case studies of competency modeling initiatives.

DAY 1

Setting the Stage

  • Competency versus performance.
  • Establishing purpose to inform strategy.

Developing Your Model

  • Conducting initial research.
    • Activity: Pulling competencies from job descriptions.
    • Activity: Partner interview.
    • Activity: Writing behavioral indicators.

  • Reaching agreement and finalizing your model.
  • Visualizing your model.
  • Maintaining your model.
  • How technology can support competency modeling.

DAY 2

Implementing Your Model

  • Assessing employees.
    • Combating sources of bias.
  • Building a matrix and other visualizations.
  • Identifying gaps.
  • Translating competencies into training solutions.

Capstone Project

Gaining Buy-In and Addressing Resistance

  • Communicating the purpose and value to different audiences.
  • Common criticisms and shortcomings of competency modeling.

Capstone Project

This course includes several application activities, including a capstone project where you will work with fellow participants to identify and define competencies, establish a competency measurement plan, and write competency-based learning objectives for a hypothetical role.
