STEP 1: COMPLETE 10 ELEARNING MODULES

After you register, you will receive access to the learning management system (LMS) where you will complete ten interactive eLearning modules. To get the most out of your virtual practicum, we recommend starting the self-paced eLearning modules at least six weeks before your practicum.

The ten eLearning modules are outlined below:

  1. Understanding the Evolution of the Training Industry
  2. Managing a High-performing Training and Development Function
  3. Creating Strategic Alignment with Business-centric and Demand-based Training Models
  4. Selecting and Managing Learning and Development Resources
  5. Optimizing Your Organization’s Training Processes
  6. Leveraging Technology to Enhance Organizational Learning
  7. Providing Solutions Based on Needs Analysis and Business Acumen
  8. Developing and Delivering High-impact Training Solutions
  9. Assessing Business and Training Performance
  10. Preparing for the CPTM Exam

STEP 2: VIRTUAL PRACTICUM
The virtual practicum is a team-based experience designed to simulate real-world scenarios and challenges associated with the training manager job role. During the practicum, you will be confronted with a real-world business problem and asked to conduct diagnostics to identify the root cause of that problem. Together, you and your peers will develop a solution using learning and development and will identify appropriate metrics to evaluate the training solution’s success.

By the end of the program, you will have developed a plan of action that aligns your training initiatives with key business goals. Each practicum includes a keynote discussion with an experienced training and development executive who has earned their own CPTM credential, and has faced many of the same challenges as you.

To view upcoming practicum dates, please click here.

STEP 3: CERTIFICATION
Passing the CPTM exam is your last step toward earning your credential. The two-and-a-half-hour online exam can be accessed at any time following the completion of your practicum.

The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions designed to test both your knowledge of the core principles needed to effectively manage corporate training programs and your ability to apply best practices in various real-world scenarios specific to the training manager job role. Candidates must receive a 70% or higher to pass the exam and earn the CPTM credential.

Steps 1 and 2 were created and refined with you in mind: This process is so effective that the exam has over an 85% pass rate for those who complete both steps as recommended!

WHAT’S NEXT?

Upon successful completion of the CPTM exam, you will:

  • Be presented with the CPTM designation to use in your professional title.
  • Receive a CPTM certificate validating your accomplishment.
  • Become a member of the elite CPTM alumni community.
  • Receive a digital badge to share on social media, including on LinkedIn.
  • Gain access to exclusive opportunities for continuing education, including virtual roundtable discussions, conferences, discounts on all Training Industry Courses and more.

RECERTIFICATION

CPTM recertification reinforces the value of continuous learning and skills development to effectively manage the current and future training needs of your organization. Recertify by completing at least 24 hours of continuing education and pay the renewal fee within a two-year period.

If you are an active status alum, you can start the CPTM recertification process here.

Training Manager Competencies
Launched in 2015, the CPTM program is backed by a body of knowledge collected annually from thousands of learning and development (L&D) leaders across the globe since 2008. These findings are published in the report, “What Makes a Training Organization Great?” and are the basis of Training Industry’s Training Manager Competency Model™. It was designed specifically to help you strategically align training to business goals, which is the foundation of great training. Read the full history here.

Over 15 years of research on high-performing training organizations to create the Certified Professional in Training Management (CPTM) program.

IS CPTM WORTH IT?

More than 95% of CPTMs surveyed say that earning this credential increased their confidence in their ability to perform their job.

Nearly 1 in 5 alumni reported securing a new job and 1 in 4 alumni reported receiving a salary increase.

After six months, nearly 90% reported that they improved training practices in their business.

Throughout our research, we have also seen that the benefits you achieve through the CPTM program only grow over time — meaning you will continue to have a lasting impact in your L&D career.

Artrell Williams, CPTM

Manager of Learning and Development, Sumitomo Rubber USA

“Within a year of completing my CPTM, I have spoken at six in-person and virtual conferences, written an article for ATD magazine and appeared on two podcasts. I have shopped for and implemented a new LMS, created a workforce development curriculum for a non-profit and received a recurring contract to deliver it. I also created a playing card game to teach tire manufacturing processes and won an award for it at TechLearn 2023! I continue to use the concepts from CPTM in a lot of new ways, referring to the content often, even a year later.”

CPTM REGISTRATION: PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS

Earn your Certified Professional in Training Management Certification in as little as two months. Step 1: Modules (Six weeks Recommended), Step 2: Practicum (4 Days), Step 3: Exam (0-6 months)

Are there any requirements to register, such as prerequisite experience or educational requirements?

There are no prerequisites for enrollment. The CPTM program is ideal for anyone seeking to further their career in talent development by developing strategic practices focused on the business of learning. To find out if CPTM is a good fit for you, take this short quiz.

Do you have any resources that will help me approach my employer about funding my CPTM certification?

Yes! In fact, four out of five CPTMs receive employer support to pursue their credential. To help you also solidify funding, please download the Approaching Your Employer kit. It contains information you can use to gain your employer’s support for CPTM certification, including a sample request letter template.

Can GI Bill benefits be used to pay for CPTM?
CPTM may qualify for GI Bill reimbursement as a certification exam expense. Training Industry has had at least one CPTM participant report successful VA reimbursement for the certification exam, and CPTM appears to align with certification reimbursement criteria because it leads to a professional credential, includes required assessment and supports a defined occupation: training manager/L&D leader.

Because GI Bill eligibility and reimbursement decisions are made by the VA and can depend on individual benefit status and submission details, Training Industry cannot guarantee reimbursement. Learners should check with the VA or their education benefits counselor before enrolling to confirm whether CPTM expenses qualify.

Can 529 funds be used to pay for CPTM?
Recent changes to 529 rules indicate that CPTM may qualify as a postsecondary credentialing expense because the credential aligns with the stated criteria: CPTM leads to a professional certification, includes required instruction and assessment, and supports a defined occupation: training manager/L&D leader. Training Industry is also a recognized provider in the L&D field, with employer recognition reflected through job postings, employer sponsorships and certificate volume.

Because eligibility can vary based on the specific 529 plan and individual tax situation, Training Industry cannot guarantee eligibility or provide tax advice. Learners should check with their 529 plan administrator or tax advisor before enrolling to confirm whether CPTM expenses qualify.

How is the CPTM credential different from other learning and development (L&D) certifications?

There are many certifications available for training and development professionals, which differ in scope and focus. However, the CPTM credential is the only certification focused specifically on the role of the training manager. The program is designed to impart the critical competencies needed to manage a training organization; by successfully passing the certification exam and earning the credential, you’ll designate that you have mastered the competencies of a successful learning and development manager. For a side-by-side comparison of the two leading L&D certifications, click here.

ABOUT THE ELEARNING MODULES

When will I be able to access the eLearning modules?

You will receive access to the self-paced eLearning modules within two hours of registering for the program. Please register using the email address where you would like access to be sent.

How long will it take to complete the eLearning modules?

We recommend that you plan to spend two to five hours per module, or 20 to 50 hours in total; we also recommend that you select a practicum date that gives you six weeks to complete all 10 modules before you participate in the practicum (although the program can be completed in less or more time).

Are there any tests associated with the eLearning modules?

Yes. There is an assessment at the end of each module. These assessments allow you to test your  knowledge, but you are not required to pass them to earn your credential.

ABOUT THE VIRTUAL PRACTICUM

Which practicum will I be scheduled to attend?

You must select practicum dates when you register for the CPTM training program: Click here for a list of upcoming practicums and dates.

How do I know which practicum to choose?

In order to give yourself ample time to complete the prework, we recommend that you register at least four to six weeks prior to your practicum date. If you are worried about completing the prework within that timeframe, you can always choose a later practicum date, or make a change to your practicum date free of charge anytime up to 30 business days before the practicum. If you find that you need extra time (or need less time), please reach out to us at learning@trainingindustry.com and we can help you change your date. Note: Any date change request made less than 30 days prior to your selected practicum will be subject to a class change fee if you chose a later date.

I have a meeting or other conflict that will prevent me from attending the full session. Is that OK?

Because the program is interactive and includes numerous group activities, we do not recommend missing any part of the live session. If you have an unavoidable conflict, please inform your instructor beforehand and/or contact us at learning@trainingindustry.com to reschedule your session.

ABOUT THE CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION

When can I take the exam?

The exam will become available in the LMS on the last day of your practicum. You can complete it virtually through Training Industry’s LMS any time after that up to six months following its release.

When should I take the exam?

We recommend completing the exam as soon as possible after your practicum to ensure that the materials are still fresh in your mind. The sooner you take the exam, the better your chances of success. However, you’ll have six months from the end of your practicum to complete the exam.

What happens after I pass the exam?

You will receive a CPTM certification packet, including a certificate of achievement and digital badge designating your credential, and you will be welcomed into the CPTM alumni community, giving you access to exclusive continuing professional development opportunities. Learn more about the benefits of becoming a CPTM alum here.

What is the exam pass rate?

The eLearning modules and practicum experience were created and refined in order to best prepare you for the exam. This process is so effective that the exam has over an 85% pass rate for those who complete both steps.

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND CPTM RECERTIFICATION

Will I need to complete ongoing training to maintain my CPTM certification?

Yes. You will be expected to complete 24 hours of ongoing training and pay the renewal fee within your two-year certification period. Training Industry provides CPTM alumni with a number of continuing education opportunities, which are available to alumni at no additional cost. You can learn more about those opportunities here.

What type of training qualifies toward recertification?

Participation in industry conferences, webinars, and other industry-relevant training or events count toward your two-year, 24-hour recertification requirement. These activities do not need to be completed through Training Industry; however, Training Industry facilitates CPTM recertification learning through regularly scheduled CPTM webinars, events, roundtables, Training Industry Courses and other special events.
